Instructor or Assistant Professor in quantitative research methods

The Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) – a joint initiative of Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), located in Boston, Massachusetts – seeks an Instructor or Assistant Professor in quantitative research methods.

The candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities

  • Work closely with colleagues, support research projects with statistical expertise across various divisions in the Department of Surgery and the Center for Surgery and Public Health (CSPH)
  • Mentor faculty, research fellows, and statistical programmers
  • Construct scientifically rigorous study designs that meet clinical needs, ethical review, and publication standards; including clinical trial design and sample size/power calculations
  • Write statistical methods sections for grant applications, study protocols, manuscripts, and IRB submissions  
  • Develop and carry out statistical analytic plans for existing and new datasets, including diagnostic, descriptive, and inferential analyses as needed
  • Communicate scientific results in various venues (papers, meetings, team labs)

Preferred qualifications and skills

  • PhD (or comparable terminal degree) in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Policy, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of 1-year relevant postdoctoral experience
  • Experience in collaborative interdisciplinary research as evidenced by publication record, research projects, or previous positions
  • Statistical programming skills (SAS and Stata preferred, but R and Python might be useful)
  • Evidence of effective communications skills
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
