University of California, Davis, Department of Surgery – Metabolomic Obesity Researcher

The Department of Surgery at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine seeks to recruit a full-time Metabolomic Obesity Researcher at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the In-Residence series. The position is designed to attract someone willing and able to help build and grow a Metabolic Research Center in collaboration with the Director of Human Nutrition, Metabolic and Microbiome Research and the Division of Foregut, Metabolic, and General Surgery (FMG). The successful candidate will report to the Director of Human Nutrition, Metabolic and Microbiome Research in the Department of Surgery.

The selected candidate will work within the Department of Surgery and collaborate with other departments, research centers, and institutes at UC Davis. The candidate must have an interest to advance scholarship and research related to new therapeutic strategies for addressing the epidemic of obesity and its co-morbidities. The individual will aim to understand the molecular underpinnings of metabolic and cardiovascular disease and to identify therapeutic targets for these highly prevalent diseases. The ideal candidate must have research and a strong interest in gut hormones, bile acid signaling, pancreatic islet function and biology, bile acid metabolism, hepatic bile acid metabolism and gut microbial acid metabolism as well as experience with animal models of bariatric surgery.

The candidate will be expected to promote the educational mission by collaborating with a diverse multidisciplinary team of investigators as well as participating in curriculum development for trainees and junior faculty. The successful candidate will have substantial opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in a way that leverages the strengths of UC Davis in comparative effectiveness research, as well as the Department of Surgery’s core surgical clinical trials data coordinating center. Cross appointments with other Divisions or Departments will be explored at the preference of the candidate.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a PhD in Physiology or related field applicable to the research expertise described above. DVM degree or proven experience in animal models of bariatric surgery will be highly prioritized. Teaching, research, university and public service is required. The ability to manage and support post-doctoral scholars and other trainees is expected. All candidates must have the ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

The successful candidate must have a proven track record of leadership and mentorship, be able to demonstrate a record of scholarship, and have evidence of successful extramural multidisciplinary funding. Experience working with physicians and leading teams is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with local, state, and federal agencies and entities is preferred.
  • Salary and level of appointment will be based upon experience and qualifications.
