General Surgeon – Gastrointestinal Surgery Faculty – UAB

Location: University of Alabama at Birmingham

We have an incredible opportunity for a General Surgeon to be part of the Gastrointestinal Surgery faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This position has been created out of a strategic relationship the Department of Surgery has created with the Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, Alabama. The general surgeon will live and work in Demopolis, while also having a clinical voluntary faculty appointment with UAB. This relationship ensures full support of the general surgeon by the GI surgery faculty including clinical support as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications include:

  • MD or equivalent degree from appropriately accredited institution • Ability to secure a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Alabama
  • Board eligible with the intention to complete certification process in 1–2 years or fully certified by the American Board of Surgery

Demopolis is the largest city in Marengo County in Western Alabama and is located on the beautiful Demopolis Lake. The lake, the largest of the Black Warrior-Tombigbee system, extends 48 miles upriver on the Black Warrior, 53 miles up the Tombigbee and covers 10,000 acres. There is a beautiful US Army Corp of Engineers’ campground and a large, full-service yacht marina located in Demopolis on the lake. The Demopolis area has many historic homes, churches, and businesses. Additionally, Demopolis’s historic downtown district has a beautiful one square block park that is one of the oldest parks in Alabama. The Demopolis city school system is one of the best in the region. Through strong support from the community and the Demopolis City School Foundation, thousands of dollars each year go directly to classroom grants. Located just 17 miles south is Soggy Bottom Lodge, a world class hunting and fishing resort. With its wildlife and hunting preserves, as well as two golf courses, Demopolis is a sportsman's paradise.

The relationship with Demopolis is part of UAB Department of Surgery’s broader vision of providing high quality surgical care to the patients of rural Alabama in their hometown. To this end, Demopolis is one of three hospitals in which we are working to develop general surgical practices. Our commitment is to ensure the surgeon’s in these hospitals are supported by the UAB Department of Surgery and that the patients in these towns have access to the highest quality surgery available in the Southeast.

The UAB Department of Surgery has a national and international reputation for clinical excellence. Our Department has increased in size over the last 15 years and is now one of the largest in the country with over 120 active faculty and more than 400 advanced practice providers and staff. The Department of Surgery consists of 9 divisions: Acute Care Surgery, Breast and Endocrine Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplantation, and Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery. As a member of the faculty, the surgeon working in Demopolis will have access to all the resources and expertise available in the UAB Medical Center.
