Chief of Surgery – Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is seeking an academic and clinical leader to serve as the Chief of Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH). Candidates must be a board-certified surgeon and will have an academic rank at Harvard Medical School commensurate with qualifications.
Reporting to the Chair, Brigham Health Department of Surgery and President, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, the Chief of Surgery at BWFH is the key leadership role within the Brigham Health Department of Surgery on the BWFH campus. The Chief is responsible for a broad range of clinical, administrative and strategic efforts at BWFH, and must foster the growth, quality and efficiency of surgical services on the BWFH campus. In collaboration with the other clinical services, the Chief will ensure that BWFH provides the highest level of patient care and experience.
The Chief must understand and advance the role of BWFH Surgery within Brigham Health and the Department of Surgery to ensure excellent service, access and clinical care for patients and their families. The Chief will have the desire and dedication to nurture and grow BWFH Surgery, including participating in the strategic vision and furthering the strategic goals for surgical services at BWFH. This requires a strong level of leadership with the ability to advance and execute the vision of BWFH Surgery within that context.
The Chief must work collaboratively and effectively with the clinical and administrative leaders across Brigham Health, including the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and BWFH. The Chief must also work closely with the other BWFH service chiefs, hospital leadership, and the staff within BWFH Surgery. This requires the ability to balance and evaluate various needs and requests to ensure that the overall success of BWFH Surgery is of upmost priority. The Chief must have exceptional leadership skills and the ability to motivate and engage others towards meeting departmental and hospital goals and objectives. The Chief should be highly skilled and adept in change management strategies, as well as demonstrate a high level of decisiveness.
The Chief will maintain a clinical practice at BWFH, including clinic time and scheduled OR time. The Chief must be visible and readily available to problem solve and facilitate clinical issues that arise; this requires comfort with a wide range of clinical and administrative issues. The Chief will have the authority and responsibility for the operational aspects of BWFH Surgery including quality measures, credentialing, new program development and oversight of academic activities at BWFH.
