Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (Rutgers-NJMS) invites applications for the position of the Benjamin F. Rush, Jr., MD Endowed Chair of Surgery. We are seeking an individual with strong leadership qualities and a record of accomplishment as a clinician and researcher to lead a department with a faculty possessing broad expertise in both clinical and basic sciences. We seek a dynamic individual who can manage and build the clinical enterprise, expand clinical and basic sciences research, maintain the commitment to graduate medical education and training, and support the long-term involvement in medical and graduate student education.
New Jersey Medical School, located in the city of Newark, is also home to Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, School of Health Professions, School of Graduate Studies, and a portion of the School of Public Health. The campus also incorporates University Hospital, a 519-bed facility with a Level I Trauma Center, widely respected tertiary cancer care, stroke, and cardiology programs, nationally renowned Centers in Neurological Surgery, Otolaryngology and Orthopedics, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The regional resource for advanced tertiary and quaternary care in many disciplines, University Hospital is positioned to become the major referral center for the surrounding regions and the State.
The current faculty consists of 32 full-time and 5 part-time clinical faculty at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor level, and a strong program in research. The Department sponsors residency programs in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Urology. In addition, the Department sponsors fellowships in Global Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Trauma Surgical Critical Care. Current divisions in the Department include Cardiothoracic Surgery, Clinical Research, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Urology, Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, and Vascular Surgery.
The successful candidate should be a nationally respected individual with experience in the leadership and management of a complex, hospital-based service in an academic teaching and research environment. Outstanding leadership qualities and an excellent understanding of the business of Surgery are required. Previous involvement with multidisciplinary research and clinical programs is particularly desirable. Experience in leading academic and/or research units, major committees, and programs in faculty development are essential.
Newark and surrounding areas have been undergoing a remarkable rebirth in recent years. The third oldest city in the nation, Newark’s history and its position as a center of commerce is being reinvigorated. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center has stimulated major interest in arts and culture, and various industries and corporate offices have been increasing their presence in the downtown area. With The Prudential Center, home to the New Jersey Devils NHL team, Newark enjoys status as a major sports city.
Our campus is located in University Heights, which is the home of several Institutions of Higher Education (New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers-Newark, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and Essex County Community College). The area neighbors University Heights Science Park and is within easy commuting distance of both New York City and suburban communities with superb school systems.
