Chief Perioperative Medical Director

Location: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Reporting to the Surgeon in Chief, the Chief Perioperative Medical Director will oversee the overall allocation and utilization of surgical block time for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), relying on the administrative, nursing and physician leaders of each pavilion for day-to-day administrative and clinical development functions. The Chief Perioperative Medical Director will have managerial and decisional authority over operating room functions, including oversight over long-term strategy related to the assignment and allocation of operating room time/room/space across the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center to advance the goals of the overall institution for surgical services. This individual will also work closely with related service line senior executives in Hospital Administration, all chairs for surgical departments and nursing executives as well as physician enterprise leadership to assure coordinated planning and support for all surgical services within Ohio State Health Network.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Manage and have authority over long-term strategy related to allocation of operating rooms, operating room time, operating room blocks across the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center to ensure optimal utilization and efficiency
  • Oversee the individual operating room block committees in each pavilion to ensure standardization of policies and procedures relative to operating room, block, and time utilization and allocation
  • Facilitate the placement of operating room cases into the appropriate setting (i.e., ambulatory cases in ambulatory facilities), with attention to issues with compliance with CMS/TJC and PPS regulations (given the CMS co-located hospital requirements)
  • Work with pavilion leaders to ensure operating metrics are in line with industry best-in-class standards, including first start and turnover time
  • Work with nursing and anesthesia leadership to ensure staffing metrics are in line with industry standards across the entire medical center system
  • Ensure the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center strategic plan, cancer program strategic plan, surgical services strategic plan and sub-specialty strategic plans are effectively implemented in each pavilion relative to achieving medical center system goals
  • Develop and meet operating targets for all surgical services at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center
  • Work with Pavilion Triad to align the surgical quality program with overall hospital clinical quality and patient safety programs
  • Work with Data Analytics Team to create and maintain dashboards to track efficiency, volume and utilization metrics
  • Report to the senior leadership team of the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and the OSUCCC – James, and advise about executive decisions related to perioperative operations across the organization

Ideal Experience

  • Five years’ experience of strong faculty clinical, academic and mentorship experience
  • Experience with service line development and implementation
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology or surgery residency
  • Board certified in general surgery or a surgery subspecialty
  • Strong track record of clinical operations leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in building innovative programs as well as recruiting and retaining faculty
  • Eligibility for Ohio medical licensure required
  • Respected experience in research, clinical practice and education. An active research program is desired but not required in basic, translational, clinical or health services research
  • Qualify for academic appointment at the associate or full professor level—academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience
